I’m writing a traditional mystery with an amateur sleuth. I have the murderer and murder method figured out, but I am at a loss when it comes to the sleuth. I only know it’ll be a mid-thirties male.
Oh, and I guess I should tell you it’s set in the 1930′s

I guess that is weird. But, After reading the title that is the first thing that popped in my head…. and I tend to have really good instincts like that. Although, I have No idea what a sleuth is…..

Ok I just looked up Sleuth. I think Dentist would be good still, because he is unassuming, plus he would have access to medical records. Maybe one of his patience help lead him to the murder indirectly.

But If I knew what the murder was, I would be a lot more helpful.

Taxi driver. That way he’ll have an excuse to be out & about and not stuck at work. Also, it could be a passenger that says something that puts him on the trail in the first place.

Given the time period I guess he could be unemployed!

How about a hustler of sorts? If he lives in California an unemployed mystery writer trying to sell scripts. And of course they are terrible, but he’s a smart guy who never forgets a clue totally overlooked by everyone else. He never thinks Wow this would make a great movie. He just solves the crime, maybe loses credit for it, and goes on working his heart out on those horrible scripts.
